Auld Reekie String Band
The Auld Reekie String Band is an oldtime Appalacian folk band, that draws influence heavily from civil war era American folk music. It was also my first professional inroad into the folk music of Appalacian America and a project that is very dear to my heart.
We put our own DIY punk twists on this genre with adaptations to the normal conventions; fretless acoustic bass guitar instead of upright bass, suitcase bass drum and foot percussion played by me. The band has a foot-stomping, punkified theme running throughout.
I formed the Auld Reekie String Band back in 2017 in collaboration with James Stewart (banjo) and Linda Larking (guitar) when we met at an open jam session in the musicians corner of the Royal Oak bar in Edinburgh. Soon after we were joined by Jakov Jandric (bass) and we began a career together.
We released our debut record "Black Bottle" in 2019, going on to tour Europe, noteably Italy and Croatia that same year, when we recorded our "Live in Zagreb" album.
We've enjoyed a fruitful career together touring around the UK and Europe and are set for more of the same in 2025.
